1. The destruction of our natural resources and contamination of our food supply continue occur, largely because of the extreme difficulty in affixing legal responsibility on those who continue to treat our environment with reckless abandon. (1999. Text 2)

The destruction of our natural resources and contamination of...contimue occur。largely because of the extreme difficulty in...on those是短语because of+宾语等内容作状语表示原因。在those后who continue to treat...

2. Attempts to prevent pollution by legislation, economic incentives and friendly persuasion have been net by lawsuits, personal and industrial denial and long delays—not only in accepting responsibility, but more importantly, in doing something about it. (1999. Text 2)

Attempts to prevent pollution by legislation, economic incentives and friendly persuasion have been net by lawsuits...long delays,可以看出,这句话用了很多并列的抽象名词表示动作,句子虽然长,但仍然是简单句。破折号后的内容是对前句attempts的进一步解释, in accepting responsibility和in doing something about it两方面的efforts。

3. The Times newspaper agrees, complaining that quality has suffered as student numbers soared, with close tutorial supervision giving way to "mass production methods more typical of European universities". (1999. Text 3)

The Times newspaper egress,complaining that... 而宾语从句中,主句是quality has suffered,as student numbers soared是时间状语从句,with close tutorial supervision giving way to...
