Chinese smartphone-makers took quite an impressive part of the smartphone market pie last year. Indian manufacturers had been at par with Chinese smartphone makers by the end of September last year, each having 34% share of the market. However, the picture totally changed in October during the festive sales, when Chinese manufacturers’ share jumped to 47%, and then a further four percentage points in November. This is the first time that Chinese brands together account for 51% share in smartphone segment, resulting in Indian brands’ combined share to drop below 20%, from a peak of over 40% in early 2016. Four Chinese handset makers are said to be among the top five in India's smartphone market during the first quarter of 2017.It is estimated that Chinese manufacturers’ share can rise to 60% of Indian smartphone market by middle of 2017.
