题目:

Some people believe that many people who work for creative arts such as painting, theatre and music should be supported financially by government. Others think that artists in creative arts should be supported by other sources instead. Discuss both and give your own opinion.

范文:

Government endowment for artists of any kind entails discretion, as for those in creative art, particularly, because the attitude of the general public towards non-historical arts is easily polarising. However, my answer will always be yes, and it is the proper way that should be centered around.

Under the patronage of the government, artists working in creative art are offered grant to do their jobs, which is usually not the case, since operating in a free market, they have to be able to sell their art in order to earn. Therefore, by doing so, a positive message will be delivered to both the artists and the public. It, on one hand, motivates the artists to create audacious arts without worrying about all financial uncertainties and, on the other hand, attracts maybe more young people to embark on creative arts. Following this line of thinking, government endowment seems very necessary, if to build a better environment for creative art.

However, some people might be apprehensive about the potential negative outcomes. As a saying goes, who control the pocket controls everything. Even if there is no explicit government control, there will be a tendency to self-censor in order to get the subsidies, which is very likely to curb the creativity of the artists and lead to mediocrity that just cater for the officials’ tastes or even government’s purpose to propagandise. For example, during the Renaissance, artists funded by the government created arts mostly relating to religious worshipping as expected by the government and individual creativities were very lacking in terms of the content. As a result, creativity, the core of the creative art seems non-existent.

From my perspective, although creative art may suffer a price at the hands of government funding, the government should fund creative arts, because it inspires people to envision and create boundlessly, which is highly valued in many facets in modern world. But this is possible only on the condition of the government promising a free environment to artists. Moreover, since it is unrealistic to endow every artist, question still remains for the government on how to actually realise it.
