The government, as a decision-maker, is the representative of citizen’sbasic interests. In this sense, every governmental policy will inevitably exerta profound influence on the further prosperity of the nation. People differgreatly in their views as to whether or not it is more preferable for thegovernment to put more efforts into planting trees in the open area of a cityinstead of building more houses. To voice my opinion，city dwellers will benefitmore from the improvement of the city environment, although the value of newconstruction cannot be underestimated.

The first convincing argument why beautifying the city is superior to theestablishment of new houses is that a cleaner and healthier city environment canprovide city residents with a better living space，which would be conducive toone’s health. For example, in my city, increasing number of trees have beenplanting per year, thus, many of us can breathe the fresh air and enjoy thecloseness to nature, many senior citizens enjoy taking a stroll in a woodsaround South Lake. Therefore, the multiplication of new plants has greatlydecreased the possibility of infecting respiratory diseases.

Here is a good example providing strong support to my stand. Whyenvironmental protection is much more important in comparison with economicdevelopment is that eco-friendly policies will benefit a city or a nation in thelong run. The issue reminds me of a clean and beautiful city Dalian, which isembraced by a rich variety of green trees or plants. As the former mayor said,Dalian will never develop economy at the cost of hurting the environment. Muchto our encouragement, eco-friendly environment attract more business men andenterprises to make huge investment in this eco-friendly city.

Indeed，I have to concede that in some metropolitan cities in the world , itis irrational and unfeasible to expect the local governments to give priority toplanting trees. By contrast，in order to ease the pressure of housingshortage，proper land resources should be allocated the construction of newinfrastructure or commercial buildings. However, I want to rebut that it is moreviable for most cities to attach importance to the amelioration of theenvironment.

In a nutshell, I re-affirm my view that planting more trees is clearly aworthwhile endeavor helping to protect the environment. The role of thegovernment in environmental conservation is challenging yet inescapable.However, as for those densely populated cities, governments of all levels shouldhave their own strategies of developing the cities.
