就像之前提示大家的一样,visitor和an occasion you had to be polite雅思口语话题可以完美的结合。前面我们聊过熊孩子,不过大人也可以很熊啊!所以我们一起来看一下“成人版讨厌的visitor”素材。

第一种访客:长辈

The visitor I’d like to talk about is my uncle who’s my father’s biggest brother. They are pretty close and we live in the same neighborhood, so he always drops by, but to be honest/honestly, I don’t enjoy his company at all.

I mean, he used to be a government official. He’s strict and rigid, and sometimes bossy and arrogant. He seems to think that everything he says is right and he doesn’t care about other people’s feelings. And I was told, before he became a government official, he was a soldier in the army, so he has lots of strict rules for his family remembers, like at the dinner table, no one is allowed to play with cellphone or talk loudly; and we have to get up early everyday, even on holidays; and when my cousin and I were little, he didn’t allow us to eat any snacks, especially candies, and after school, my cousin and I had to go straight home, we couldn’t hang out and have fun with other classmates.

Even today, he still has a problem with the way I dress and the way I talk. Every time he comes to my place, it’s like he has some kind of magic power ‘cause he could turn seconds into hours.

But you see, I have to respect him and be polite to him, after all, he’s my uncle. So every time he gives me a lecture, I just pretend I am listening carefully and I just keep nodding my head while he’s talking, but actually, what he said just goes in one ear and out the other.

如果是have to be polite的情况,开头可以改成这样:

Well, the other day, our family had a family reunion dinner, and I saw lots of family members that I hadn’t seen for a long time, but I didn’t have a good time ‘cause the whole time I was sitting next to my uncle who always finds fault with me. He’s my father’s biggest brother…

雅思口语语言点解析:

drop by / in/ round = drop in on somebody / drop into something = to pay an informal visit to a person or a place 例如:

Drop by sometime.

I thought I'd drop in on you while I was passing.

Sorry we're late—we dropped into the pub on the way.

company = the fact of being with somebody else and not alone例如:

I enjoy her company (= I enjoy being with her).

She enjoys her own company (= being by herself) when she is travelling.

The children are very good company (= pleasant to be with) at this age.

a pleasant evening in the company of friends

He's coming with me for company.

have a problem with something = to disagree with or object to something 例如:

I have no problem with you working at home tomorrow.

We are going to do this my way. Do you have a problem with that? (= showing that you are impatient with the person that you are speaking to)

lecture = a long angry talk that somebody gives to one person or a group of people because they have done something wrong例如:

I know I should stop smoking—don't give me a lecture about it.

go in one ear and out the other = (informal) (of information, etc.) to be forgotten quickly例如:

Everything I tell them just goes in one ear and out the other.

find fault with somebody / something = to look for and discover mistakes in somebody / something; to complain about somebody / something

第二种访客:邻居

The visitor I’d like to talk about is Uncle Jia who’s my next-door neighbor.

I’m not a big fun, ‘cause when I was little, whenever he came to my home, he always made fun of me. He thought I wouldn’t be offended ‘cause I was just a little boy, but actually, I remembered every single mean thing he said about me. Usually, I’m quite forgiving, but he was way out of line. For example, when I was in primary school, my head used to be unusually big, and he said to my face that I must be really stupid, ‘cause no one’s head should be that huge. That really hurt my feelings, and I’ve been self-conscious about my appearance since then.

Besides, he’s a heavy smoker, every time he comes to have a visit, he always makes my home smell horribly bad.

And it’s been a while since I last saw him. It was before I went off to college. He paid a visit to me at my place, because of the previous experience I have, I was not that welcoming, but I had to be polite to him, after all, he’s my guest. I pretended to be quite nice to him. We talked about my plans in college, and what I did in that summer vacation. I even asked him to stay for dinner. Anyway, in my memory, I was really hospitable that day, even though I didn’t want to be that way.

同理,如果是polite的场合,开头可以直接这样扣题:

This topic reminds me of the time I had to be polite to my next-door neighbor.

I call him Uncle Jia, and he’s been my neighbor for… like 20 years, but I’m not a big fun, …

雅思口语语言点解析:

mean (to somebody) = (of people or their behavior) unkind, for example by not letting somebody have or do something例如:

Don't be so mean to your little brother!

forgiving = willing to forgive 例如:

She had not inherited her mother's forgiving nature.

The public was more forgiving of the president's difficulties than the press and fellow politicians.

out of line = (informal) behaving in a way that is not acceptable or right

self-conscious about something = nervous or embarrassed about your appearance or what other people think of you 例如:

He's always been self-conscious about being so short.

She was a shy, self-conscious girl.
