“路线图”的这个比喻意来自英语，是road map或roadmap的直译。

road map在英语里也是个新词。2000年，英国牛津大学出版社推出的Oxford Advanced Learner’sDictionary(《牛津高阶英语词典》)第六版还没有收录这个词。时隔五年，2005年出版的Oxford Advanced Learner’sDictionary第七版就收录了roadmap。该词典给了road map两个释义。其一是本义：a map thatshows the roads of anarea, especially one that is designed for a person who is driving acar。这条释义反映了21世纪初的时代特点：越来越多的人开汽车。road map不仅仅是一个地区的道路图，更是为驾车人准备的行车路线图。

road map的第二个释义是引申义：a set of instructions or suggestions about how to dosth. orfind out about sth.。roadmap不再是一张地图，而是实施一项行动的计划或方案。就像汉语成语“按图索骥”一样，其意思是比喻“按照线索寻找事物”。roadmap包括目标、准则、说明、步骤、建议和时间表等内容，例如：
