From Boston to Los Angeles, from New York City toChicago to Dallas, museumsare either planning,building, or wrapping up wholesale expansionprograms. Theseprograms already have radicallyaltered facades and floor plans or are expectedtodo so in the not-too-distant future.

In New York City alone, six major institutions havespread up and out intothe air space andneighborhoods around them or are preparing to doso.

The reasons for this confluence of activity are complex, but one factor isa considerationeverywhere - space. With collections expanding, with the needsand functions of museumschanging, empty space has become a very preciouscommodity.

Probably nowhere in the country is this more true than at the PhiladelphiaMuseum of Art, whichhas needed additional space for decades and which receivedits last significant facelift ten yearsago. Because of

the space crunch, the ArtMuseum has become increasingly cautious inconsidering acquisitions and donationsof art, in some cases passing up opportunities tostrengthen its collections.托福和雅思

Deaccessing - or selling off - works of art has taken on new importancebecause of themuseum's space problems. And increasingly, curators have beenforced to juggle gallery space,rotating one masterpiece into public view whileanother is sent to storage.

Despite the clear need for additional gallery and storage space, however,the museum has noplan, no plan to break out of its envelope in the next fifteenyears, according to PhiladelphiaMuseum of Art's president.
