They say “honesty is the only thing worth having in this world, yet itsells for so little”. This, I deem, best illustrates the point whether alwaysbeing honest is of paramount importance in any relationship. It goes withoutsaying that honesty should be highly valued in our daily life, but to carry thepractice too far as to embrace all our social encounters would be a far-fetchedone. My reasons are listed below.

To begin with, there are circumstances when telling white lies would begreatly appreciated. That one relative thrown into deep despair with terminallung cancer would be enormously cheered up by the knowledge that the diagnosiswas “just tuberculosis”. A friend who suffers from recurring failure in businesswould manage to summon up the courage to start from scratch knowing that“success is waiting at the end of every journey”. A little girl born withphysical challenge must perceive the world from the bright side if what she wastold was “heaven favors those who went through extreme sufferings.” All of thesecases of “dishonesty” play an indispensible role in our everyday dealings withpeople, without which the whole world would be filled with countless downtroddenspirits.

To further illustrate, utter honesty can, and in many cases, lead to ourdownfall. History is replete with such examples. Consider, for example, EdwardSnowden, the former American CIA contractor. In June, 2013, gnawed by a guiltyconscience, and urged by the maxim of telling the truth, he was finally able toreveal to the world that the American government was surveilling not only on itsallies but also on the rest of the world. Snowden soon came under internationalattention after the revelation, which was followed by angry charges by theAmerican government on accounts of treason and theft of confidential governmentinformation. As a result, he flew to Moscow, Russia, leaving behind him a worldof indignant people, astonished and petrified, and remained nowhere to be foundtill now. Thus, total honesty can sometimes serve us wrong.toefl

From what has been discussed above, we can easily reach the conclusion thathonesty is a great virtue, but it should be carried out with certain caveats andthere are times when little white lies are just what needed to spice up ourlife.
