To begin with, consider children. In the past, for children aged from fiveto seven, they usually abandon themselves in the neighborhood playground. Butnow, in order for them to gain a competitive edge over their peers, pre-schooleducation such as piano lessons and art classes are the norm. Take my nephew asan example. From the age of 4, he has been taking calligraphy lessons, and keepspracticing it for three years in a row. With a schoolbag fully packed, he wouldset out for what he described the “most boring class” he has ever had.Sometimes, he would splash the ink all over the wall just to let out hisdistress, but of course, to no avail, and he has to keep practicing it if hedidn’t want to lag behind. As a result, from an early age, children weredeprived of the chances of doing something that truly appeals to him because ofthe fierce competition.

Secondly, the dire condition is even more manifest when it comes to theworking adults. Take college professors as an example, compared with what’s inthe past when all they have to do was to lecture well, college professors todayhave to face the pressure of “publish or perish”, in which a professor isstrictly required to produce quality dissertations in order to get tenure, orelse he or she will be forced to switch to other schools that are below thecurrent level. Moreover, one needs to look no further than clinical doctors.Today, their performance is closely related to drug sales as opposed to what’sin the past when all they have to do was to take good care of a patient.Therefore, working adults are driven fanatically by professional demands as muchas it was in the past.

From what has been discussed above, we can easily come to the conclusionthat life today is definitely no more comfortable than it was when ourgrandparents were children.
